Beginning Painting

with Judith-Grace Miller

brushes.jpg

Grab your paints and brushes and get ready for some fun in this adult painting class for acrylic and oil painters! We’ll cover the nuts and bolts of painting—design, line, shape, color, form, value, and edges. Perfect for beginners and artists looking for a refresher.

Each week we’ll focus on a different topic—drawing and observational skills, identifying proper values, creating a dynamic composition, underpaintings, mixing color with intent. We’ll do this all through carefully designed painting exercises which will allow you time to explore both painting from life as well as painting from your own selected photos.

There will be weekly instructor demonstrations and plenty of one on one easel side assistance to maximize your progress.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Judith-Grace Miller

I knew at a young age art was my passion and was rarely seen without my sketchbook. During my teen years, I began painting window murals on the storefronts of the local shops in Hudson, MA where I grew up. I received my BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, where I majored in graphic design and worked as a designer for several Boston area advertising agencies and book publishers before transitioning to painting full time. I paint using oil, acrylic, gouache and am attracted to color temperature and the affect light has on color. I believe it’s much more than value and tonal relationships that make for an exciting painting, but rather color temperature and good design which play an integral role in the overall mood of a painting. Our New England coast remains a favorite subject of mine and I often paint en plein air (outdoors) capturing the rocky coast in warmer weather. People and beach themes continue to appear in my studio work over the winter months where I enjoy capturing ordinary people having fun at the beach.
